Alex Manning, Northwest Regional Vice President

Alex Manning

We are thrilled to welcome Alex Manning, combat veteran and higher education professional, to the team as the new Regional Vice President for the northwest region!

Alex, what are you most proud of in your career? In your life?

Over the past seven years, I am proud to have helped more than 200 colleges and universities achieve their short and long-term goals. My background includes working with software reporting tools, document enhancement software, checking processing solutions, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and electronic research administration. I love the synergy of collaboration, understanding the problem, and identifying ways to support the institution’s goals and strategic plan.

Personally, I am especially proud of my military service and experience. Originally from Philadelphia, I moved to San Diego in 2001 after joining the United States Marine Corps. I served a total of eight years, and am a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

But what am I most proud of in my life? That would be my family. My amazing wife, Michelle, and I are kept busy on weekends with our three children – Ema, 13, Lucas, 9, and Jack, 4 – and their sports activities. I work remotely out of my home office in Rocklin, California, and we enjoy trips to the Pacific Northwest each year.

What’s your role at Nelnet Campus Commerce?

Our goal is to help institutions provide the best level of service to their students. To do that, the Nelnet Campus Commerce Northwest team takes a consultative approach. We bring value to institutions by mapping out their processes from start to finish. This, in combination with our technology, helps business offices be more efficient, streamline processes, and increase cash flow.

I’m looking forward to connecting with and supporting institutions across the Northwest.

What has the transition to the company been like?

I have discovered there really is such a thing as “Nebraska nice!” From our leadership to our support desk team, there is a sincere sense of family. I get to work in a company that has a wonderful culture of support coupled with a great product suite.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Helping people. There’s nothing like visiting with an institution to understand what their goals and roadblocks are, and how we can partner with them to offer solutions that get them to where they want to be.

I’ve spent years working with departments like financial aid and IT, and I still get goosebumps when we work together to find solutions. To truly understand the collective power of how the bursar, student services, and financial aid offices impact the future of a student – there’s really nothing like it. At the crux of it, I believe that we offer solutions that change people’s lives.

In an alternative universe, if you didn’t work at Nelnet Campus Commerce, what would you do?

Interesting question! I’d definitely become a political science professor. During and after my military service, I continued my education at several California community colleges. I eventually transferred to San Francisco State to earn a B.A. in political science, and an MBA from the University of California, Irvine. I love the college atmosphere — teaching and helping others — as well as politics.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Trust your gut instinct.
  • Always ask follow-up questions.
